The GMMP is a worldwide media monitoring, research, and advocacy project for gender equality in and through the news media. It is active in more than 100 countries.
2025 marks 30 years since the first global monitoring was held, coinciding with the date of adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action for the advancement of women.
The GMMP responds to global policy recommendations to change the under- and misrepresentation of women and discrimination in media communications.
It brings needed news media accountability into the struggle for gender equality and women’s human rights. And it makes the case for gender equality, diversity, and inclusion as a hallmark of media professionalism.
Media monitoring is used to gather statistical evidence on gender in the global news media every five years. The data – both quantitative and qualitative – highlight gender biases, stereotyping, and sexism, as well as best practices in gender-responsive journalism.
The GMMP’s methodology ensures there is comparable, accurate analysis of data collected in different settings. Each new edition updates the data to use to sensitize journalists and media users, and drive change in media policy and practice.
The GMMP is a collaborative effort, with volunteer media monitors from civil society, academia and the media industry in over 100 countries throughout the world.
Six GMMPs have been carried out so far, every five years from 1995 to 2020.
GMMP+30 is taking place this year, in 2025. The exact date is communicated to the monitoring teams by GMMP coordinators.

En 2025 se cumplirán 30 años desde que se llevó a cabo el primer monitoreo global, coincidiendo con la fecha de adopción de la Declaración y Plataforma de Acción de Beijing para el avance de la mujer.
El GMMP responde a las recomendaciones de políticas globales para cambiar la representación insuficiente y errónea de las mujeres y la discriminación en las comunicaciones de los medios.
Aporta la necesaria responsabilidad de los medios en la lucha por la igualdad de género y los derechos humanos de las mujeres. Y defiende la igualdad de género, la diversidad y la inclusión como sello distintivo del profesionalismo de los medios.
El monitoreo de medios se utiliza para recopilar datos estadísticos sobre género en los medios globales cada cinco años. Los datos, tanto cuantitativos como cualitativos, destacan los sesgos de género, los estereotipos y el sexismo, así como las mejores prácticas en periodismo con perspectiva de género.
La metodología del GMMP garantiza un análisis comparable y preciso de los datos recopilados en diferentes entornos. Cada nueva edición actualiza los datos para sensibilizar a periodistas y usuarios de medios, e impulsar cambios en la política y la práctica de los medios.
El GMMP es un esfuerzo colaborativo, con monitores y monitoras de medios voluntarios de la sociedad civil, el mundo académico y la industria de los medios en más de 100 países de todo el mundo.

Le GMMP répond aux recommandations politiques mondiales visant à modifier la sous-représentation et la représentation erronée des femmes et de la discrimination dans les communications médiatiques.
Il introduit la nécessaire responsabilité des médias dans la lutte pour l’égalité des sexes et les droits humains des femmes. Il plaide en faveur de l’égalité des sexes, de la diversité et de l’inclusion en tant que caractéristiques du professionnalisme des médias.
Le monitorage des médias permet de recueillir tous les cinq ans des données statistiques sur l’égalité entre les hommes et les femmes dans les médias mondiaux. Les données – tant quantitatives que qualitatives – mettent en évidence les préjugés, les stéréotypes et le sexisme, ainsi que les meilleures pratiques en matière de journalisme respectueux de l’égalité des sexes.
La méthodologie du GMMP garantit une analyse comparable et précise des données recueillies dans différents contextes. Chaque nouvelle édition met à jour les données afin de sensibiliser les journalistes et les utilisateurs des médias et de faire évoluer les politiques et les pratiques des médias.
Le GMMP est le fruit d’une collaboration entre des moniteurs et monitrices bénévoles de la société civile, du monde universitaire et de l’industrie des médias dans plus de 100 pays à travers le monde.
