30 Abr Meet GMMP Somalia Coordinator Abdiwali Gooni
Name: Abdiwali Gooni
GMMP Coordinator for: Somalia
Since: 2015
Why are you a GMMP coordinator? What motivated you to lead the GMMP?
I am passionate about gender equality and the transformative power of media. Leading the GMMP has allowed me to contribute to this cause by highlighting gender disparities and promoting balanced and fair representation in media.
How are you using the GMMP methodology, tools and findings? How have any of these dimensions of the GMMP shaped the work of your organization, institution or network?
The GMMP methodology and tools have been integral in our work with the National Union of Somali Journalists, providing a structured approach to monitor and analyze gender representation in media. The findings have helped us advocate for policy changes and educate media professionals on the importance of gender-sensitive reporting.
What positive change has the GMMP driven in your context? What contribution has it made to the process towards gender equality in or through the media?
The GMMP has driven significant awareness and change in our media landscape. We have seen an increase in gender-sensitive content and a more balanced representation of women in media. This has contributed to a broader societal shift towards gender equality.
As we mark the GMMP’s 30th anniversary now in 2025, why do you believe that it is crucial for the GMMP to continue?
The GMMP’s work remains crucial as gender disparities in media representation persist. Continuing this initiative will help sustain progress, inspire new generations of media professionals, and ensure that gender equality remains a priority in media and beyond.
