Why are you a GMMP coordinator? What motivated you to lead the GMMP?
I became a GMMP coordinator to highlight and address how media in Myanmar presents women. My motivation is to advocate for gender equality in media representation and to influence media houses to prioritize women journalists in leading roles.
How are you using the GMMP methodology, tools and findings? How have any of these dimensions of the GMMP shaped the work of your organization, institution or network?
As a GMMP coordinator, I have utilized the methodology and findings to conduct discussions and advocacy with media stakeholders. These efforts have encouraged media houses to develop strategies that promote women journalists’ leadership in the media landscape of Myanmar.
What positive change has the GMMP driven in your context? What contribution has it made to the process towards gender equality in or through the media?
The GMMP has driven significant positive changes by raising awareness about the representation of women in media. It has contributed to the process of gender equality by influencing media policies and practices to be more inclusive and equitable.
As we look to the GMMP’s 30th anniversary in 2025, why do you believe that it is crucial for the GMMP to continue?
It is crucial for the GMMP to continue as it provides valuable data and insights that drive gender equality in media. The ongoing efforts ensure that the progress made is sustained and further improved, especially in challenging contexts like the current conflict situation in Myanmar.
Soe San Htike is a member of the Central Executive Committee of the Myanmar Women’s Journalists Society and the Independent Press Council Myanmar. She has over 12 years of experience in journalism, specializing in investigative journalism and documentary filmmaking.
