Meet GMMP Luxembourg Coordinator Claire Schadeck

Name: Claire Schadeck
GMMP Coordinator for: Luxembourg
Since: 2020

Why are you a GMMP coordinator? What motivated you to lead the GMMP?

As the project leader of the feminist organization CID | Fraen an Gender, I am happy to coordinate the GMMP. By leading this project, I aim to contribute to a more equitable portrayal of women and gender minorities in the media, which is crucial for fostering an inclusive society.

How are you using the GMMP methodology, tools and findings? How have any of these dimensions of the GMMP shaped the work of your organization, institution or network?

We have actively utilized the GMMP methodology and tools to collect and analyze data on gender representation in the media. The findings are disseminated during a press conference, which raises public awareness and engages journalists in discussions about gender bias. This visibility has encouraged media professionals to reflect on their practices and has provided a robust evidence base for advocating for more balanced and fair media portrayals within our organization and beyond.

What positive change has the GMMP driven in your context? What contribution has it made to the process towards gender equality in or through the media?

While the progress in Luxembourg has been limited, the GMMP has been instrumental in highlighting the ongoing issues of gender disparity. It has sparked important conversations and brought gender equality to the forefront of media discourse. Although significant changes are yet to be seen, the GMMP’s work is laying the groundwork for future advancements by consistently keeping gender representation issues in the public eye.

As we mark the GMMP’s 30th anniversary now in 2025, why do you believe that it is crucial for the GMMP to continue?

The pursuit of gender equality remains unfinished, and the GMMP plays a critical role in monitoring and documenting the progress and setbacks in media representation. As we approach the 30th anniversary now in 2025, it is vital to continue this work to ensure accountability and to track the evolution or stagnation of gender portrayals in the media. The ongoing efforts of the GMMP provide essential insights and data that drive policy changes and advocacy efforts towards achieving true gender equality in media representation.

Claire Schadeck is project coordinator at CID | Fraen an Gender in Luxembourg.
