The invisibility of gender-based violence not only leaves it out of the public eye but also out of government action, thereby enabling social and state permissiveness and impunity.

Women journalists who champion human rights are the most frequently targeted. CIMAC’s records alone show that in 2025 in Mexico, a woman journalist was attacked every 26 hours. However, women journalists play a transformative role in newsrooms; they are the ones who accompany victims of violence, who challenge stereotypes, inequalities, and violence, and who consult other women as sources of information. The transformative role of women as sources of information and as news producers.

This violence occurs within a context of rising conservative currents that relegate women to the private sphere and give them little relevance in the news.

In Latin America, news stories that challenge gender stereotypes have decreased (12% in 2020, 8% in 2025), while content that reinforces gender stereotypes has increased in a regional context marked by the rise of conservative ideas at the political and social levels.

Added to this context is the slow recovery following the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition to the already well-known conditions this includes: the monopoly and concentration of news agendas dictated by a few media companies, the precarious working conditions under which media professionals carry out their work, and the closure of funding mechanisms through government advertising – particularly targeting critical media – as well as the digital revolution that has transformed news production and consumption.

Media professionals face disproportionate competition from content creators who are rapidly establishing themselves on a global scale.

<img decoding="async" width="1024" height="341" src="https://whomakesthenews.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/CSW70-Cirenia_web3un-1024x341.jpg" alt="Left, an auditorium filled with people listening to a speaker at the UN, viewed from the rear of the room.
