{"id":14035,"date":"2025-12-12T14:54:20","date_gmt":"2025-12-12T19:54:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/whomakesthenews.org\/?p=14035"},"modified":"2025-12-12T20:25:05","modified_gmt":"2025-12-13T01:25:05","slug":"launch-of-gmmp-global-report-2025-initiates-strategic-re-think-to-drive-gender-equality-in-the-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/whomakesthenews.org\/es\/launch-of-gmmp-global-report-2025-initiates-strategic-re-think-to-drive-gender-equality-in-the-news\/","title":{"rendered":"Launch of GMMP Global Report 2025 initiates strategic re-think to drive gender equality in the news"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">With progress towards media gender parity on a plateau, women\u2019s rights advocates are taking time to pause, reflect, and innovate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gender equality in the global news media is at a crossroads 30 years after the adoption of the Beijing Platform for Action, the 2025 <a href=\"https:\/\/whomakesthenews.org\/the-gmmp\/\">Global Media Monitoring Report (GMMP)<\/a> has found.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following an initial slow and steady rise in women\u2019s share of visibility and voice in the news, progress has flatlined, Sarah Macharia, GMMP Expert Group convenor, told participants at the launch of the <a href=\"https:\/\/whomakesthenews.org\/gmmp-2025-final-reports\/#global-report\">Global Report of the 7th edition<\/a> of the largest and longest-running study on the gender in the world\u2019s media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though women make up half of the world\u2019s population, only 26% of the people seen heard or spoken about in print and broadcast news, are women. The story on dedicated news websites is only marginally better, at 29%.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">30-year findings<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Thirty years ago, governments committed in <a href=\"https:\/\/whomakesthenews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/who-makes-the-news\/Imported\/documents\/section%20j%20of%20the%20beijing%20platform%20for%20action.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Section J of the Beijing Platform for Action<\/a> to transform women\u2019s participation in and through the media and to eliminate harmful gender stereotypes, noted Kalliopi Mingeirou, Chief of the Ending Violence against Women and Girls Section of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unwomen.org\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UN Women<\/a>, a GMMP programmatic partner since 2010.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Media monitoring was recognized as a key strategy to help drive and inform action. \u201cSince 1995, the [GMMP] has given us the most consistent evidence we have on gender in the news,\u201d Mingeirou said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over 80% of the countries in the world, with 97% of the global population, have participated in one or more of the seven GMMP studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The data in the <a href=\"https:\/\/whomakesthenews.org\/gmmp-2025\/\">special edition GMMP from 2025<\/a> show that there has been a mere nine-point increase in women\u2019s presence in the news in those 30 years, Macharia reported \u2013 with most of this coming in the first 15 years after Beijing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The picture for minority women is even more dismal; less than one in 10 women in the news belong to a minority group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/GMMP2025-reports-Global\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"341\" src=\"https:\/\/whomakesthenews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/GMMP30-GRlaunch_webinsert-overall-1024x341.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14036\" srcset=\"https:\/\/whomakesthenews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/GMMP30-GRlaunch_webinsert-overall-1024x341.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/whomakesthenews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/GMMP30-GRlaunch_webinsert-overall-300x100.jpg 300w, https:\/\/whomakesthenews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/GMMP30-GRlaunch_webinsert-overall-768x256.jpg 768w, https:\/\/whomakesthenews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/GMMP30-GRlaunch_webinsert-overall-1536x512.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/whomakesthenews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/GMMP30-GRlaunch_webinsert-overall-2048x682.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/whomakesthenews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/GMMP30-GRlaunch_webinsert-overall-18x6.jpg 18w, https:\/\/whomakesthenews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/GMMP30-GRlaunch_webinsert-overall-700x233.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAll four media types have converged and flatlined to a level far short of parity. Less than 2% of news articles deal with this fundamental violation of human rights that affects one in three women and girls worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The newly published report shows that media have not made progress either in <strong>challenging gender stereotypes<\/strong>. In 20 years of GMMP research into the gender quality of reporting, 6% (in 2010) was the highest proportion of coverage that defies stereotypes. Since 2010, this has stagnated at only three in 100 stories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is \u201ca consistent lack of progress by the news media in producing content that disrupts the status quo,\u201d Macharia said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reset required<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The time has come to pause, reflect, and innovate to break through the persisting inertia, Macharia observed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTo arrive at a plateau implies that there was progress in the past. The almost standstill pace of change in the last 15 years points to a need for a reset, a radical shift in strategies.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignfull has-text-color has-background\" style=\"color:#000000;background-color:#f3b7c6\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<div style=\"height:64px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-ecf59598d49e1d65b98bd8ae62053313\" style=\"color:#ec008b;line-height:.9\"><strong>GMMP 2025<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"schedule-a-visit\" style=\"font-size:55px;line-height:1.15\"><strong>Discover the Findings<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-horizontal is-content-justification-center is-layout-flex wp-container-core-buttons-is-layout-499968f5 wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button has-custom-width wp-block-button__width-50 is-style-fill\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-text-color has-background has-text-align-center wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/GMMP2025-reports\" style=\"border-radius:50px;color:#ffffff;background-color:#ec008b\">Go to Final Reports<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:64px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Confront structural barriers in newsrooms<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This refocusing of efforts to advance gender equality in and through the media must \u201cconfront structural and institutional barriers\u201d \u2013 starting with those in newsrooms, said Amie Joof-Cole, GMMP West &amp; Central Africa coordinator and national coordinator for the GMMP in Senegal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means questioning a range of factors like power structures, gatekeeping, leadership and editorial control, cultural and social norms, and risks for women journalists, the director of the Inter-Africa Network for Women, Media, Gender, and Development (<a href=\"https:\/\/famedev.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">FAMEDEV<\/a>) stressed in her regional perspective from Africa, where the gender gap in newsrooms is the largest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And it means truly implementing \u2013 not only talking about \u2013 cross-cutting gender-responsive policies in newsrooms, with accountability mechanisms like internal audits and public reporting on coverage, she added. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Eradicate violence against women journalists<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>New strategies must respond to the increasing risk of violence that women journalists experience, stressed Cirenia Celestino Ortega, speaking from Latin America, a region where female media professionals face high levels of violence and stigmatization, both online and offline. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The year during which the 7th GMMP was carried out \u201cis a year that will likely be remembered as one of the most dangerous years to exercise free expression, particularly for women reporters and journalists,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/whomakesthenews.org\/meet-gmmp-mexico-latin-america-coordinator-cirenia-celestino-ortega\/\">GMMP Latin America regional coordinator<\/a> and GMMP Mexico coordinator stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Celestino Ortega, director of Comunicaci\u00f3n e Informaci\u00f3n de la mujer (<a href=\"https:\/\/cimac.org.mx\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CIMAC<\/a>), urged that commitments in Section J of the Beijing Platform be renewed, with the addition of a third strategic action aimed at eradicating violence against women journalists. This will require cooperation between journalism schools, media companies, governments, and women journalists, she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Put human rights before profit<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u201cdepoliticization\u201d of the women\u2019s rights agenda, heightened by the COVID-19 pandemic, has resulted in \u201cgovernments, global organizations, and the private sector [quitting] their responsibility for the advancement of women in society,\u201d noted Aimee Vega Montiel, chair of the <a href=\"https:\/\/gamag.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Global Alliance on Gender and Media<\/a> (GAMAG), co-convenor of the launch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said that a shift in strategy needs to home in on the resultant \u201cemphasis on development over fundamental rights.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The biggest problem is the power hierarchies, affirmed Hilary Nicholson, GMMP Expert Group member and <a href=\"https:\/\/whomakesthenews.org\/meet-gmmp-jamaica-the-caribbean-coordinator-hilary-nicholson\/\">GMMP regional coordinator for the Caribbean<\/a>. \u201cMedia conglomerates are committed to profit, not to equality, much less gender equality.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For real progress to happen, power structures must be dismantled, she said, and the emphasis recentered on principles of professional journalism, \u201cwhich require accuracy, fairness, commitment to truth, and non-biased reporting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This applies just as well to today\u2019s digitalized spaces, which are not neutral but mediated by power, Vega Montiel added.
