What motivated you to lead the GMMP?

I joined the GMMP at its inception in 1995, when I collaborated as a coder. From the beginning, I recognized the importance of Puerto Rico’s participation in a global study that would help highlight gender inequality in the press. For this reason, in 2000, for the second monitoring, I agreed to take on the coordination of the national project. Since then, I have continued to lead this effort in my country.

How are you using the GMMP methodology, tools and findings? How have any of these dimensions of the GMMP shaped the work of your organization, institution or network?

As a journalism professor (University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus), I have involved students and faculty in communication and journalism in media analysis. In this regard, the students and faculty who have collaborated have understood the characteristics of the design and methodological tools that are applied to various national-cultural contexts. Likewise, the research process has helped raise awareness about gender issues, and the results have served as an empirical reference for studies in the field of journalism.

What positive change has the GMMP driven in your context? What contribution has it made to the process towards gender equality in or through the media?

Since 2000, the results of the GMMP have been presented publicly and reviewed by the media in Puerto Rico. They have also been shared with media executives and have led to the creation of academic and professional activities. There is no doubt that conducting this study in a systematic manner helps to ensure that gender issues in the press are a topic of ongoing public discussion.

As we mark the GMMP’s 30th anniversary now in 2025, why do you believe that it is crucial for the GMMP to continue?

Efforts to continue this project and add more countries contribute to exposing gender inequality on a global scale and, in doing so, to the fight for a more just and equitable society.

Lourdes Lugo-Ortiz is professor of journalism at the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus.

Conozca a la Coordinadora del GMMP para Puerto Rico, Lourdes Lugo-Ortiz

Nombre: Lourdes Lugo-Ortiz
