Hello, my name is Marcela Gabiud, I am part of the coordination of global media monitoring in Argentina and the organization that accompanies us is Comunicaci\u00f3n para la Igualdad<\/a>. I have been part of the monitoring coordination in our country since 2010. In 2005 was my first participation as a volunteer and it really transformed my view of the media.\u00a0

I believe that the role of communicator allows us to use these tools to influence public policies in different countries. In our case, it was a very good tool to be able to introduce the gender perspective in the law on audiovisual communication services in 2009, which entered into debate and where civil society organizations had an important participation in its definition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I also believe that the monitoring methodology<\/a> is a tool for those of us who study communication and those who are in the media to know what the reality is because many times there is a belief that women have reached the same level of participation and work as men and precisely the monitoring shows that they have not, both in the representation of the news and in those who report the different news. 

And this has also been a way of influencing with this data the transformation of the way we look at the media and the inequality that exists in the media when it comes to accessing job positions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It has always been very positive the networking that has allowed us to participate in the global media monitoring, which is a great experience where thousands of people participate at the same time observing the news that day. And I think it’s essential that this monitoring continues to be done because clearly inequality in the contexts that we are currently in has not diminished, but in some cases has deepened. 

So, it is essential that we get support for this study to continue to be carried out because we are in a moment of regression in some countries in terms of access to the right to communication as a human right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marcela Gabiud is a member of the civil society organization Communication for Equality. She is a career services director in gender and diversity policies at the National University of La Plata<\/a> and part of the PAR Network<\/a> (Argentine Journalists for Non-Sexist Communication).<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
