What motivated you to lead the GMMP?

I have been a volunteer with the radio monitoring team for the GMMP since 2019 and was selected as the new national coordinator for the GMMP in 2025. I took on the role of GMMP coordinator because of my deep commitment to gender justice and inclusion in the media.

My background as an audiovisual communicator and international journalist has given me first-hand knowledge of gender inequalities in media coverage. My motivation to lead the GMMP stems from the urgent need to transform these dynamics and ensure that women and other gender minorities are represented fairly and equitably in the media.

How do you use (or have you applied) the GMMP methodology, tools, and/or results? How have any of these dimensions of the GMMP influenced the work of your organization, institution, or network?
At the educational communication center Voces Nuestras, we have used GMMP data and analysis to design communication strategies that make women and other gender minorities visible as experts and leaders.

We have implemented training workshops for young people, human rights defenders, journalists, and communicators that focused on community communication for the defense of human rights and promoting equitable, feminist, and non-stereotypical gender representation.

In addition, GMMP results have been crucial to our awareness campaigns addressing the urgent need to change traditional narratives in the media.

What positive changes has the GMMP brought about in your context? What contribution has it made to the process of promoting equality between women and men in or through the media?
The GMMP has been instrumental in highlighting gender disparities in media coverage in Costa Rica.

Although our country stands out for having a smaller gap in women’s representation in the media, the treatment of news remains discouraging, with a tendency toward victimization and a lack of equitable representation. Thanks to GMMP data, we have been able to promote the inclusion of women’s voices as experts and leaders in the media of the organizations we work with.

We have also led public and political advocacy processes to update radio and television legislation, seeking a legal framework that promotes the human right to communication and prevents the monopolization of speech.

Looking ahead to the GMMP’s 30th anniversary in 2025, why do you think it is essential that it continue?
The GMMP is essential because it provides high-quality data and analysis that are critical to understanding and addressing gender inequalities in the media. The lack of diversity of voices in the media perpetuates patriarchal structures and serves the economic interests of large commercial media outlets.

As the world rebuilds, it is crucial that the media reflect accurate, inclusive, and empowering representation of women and other gender minorities. Continuing the GMMP means continuing to push for structural change in the media industry, ensuring that the narratives that are constructed do not perpetuate harmful stereotypes but instead promote equality and justice.

Génesis R.
