Why are you a GMMP coordinator? What motivated you to lead the GMMP?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This will be my first experience as a coordinator, although I was already a volunteer in the 2020 monitoring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 2020 experience was very interesting and motivating for me, I found the results revealing in many ways. I believe that monitoring is not only useful in identifying issues but also as a way of denouncing a situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How are you using the GMMP methodology, tools and findings? How have any of these dimensions of the GMMP shaped the work of your organization, institution or network?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2022, I coordinated a media monitoring exercise that sought to reveal the frequency and the way in which women politicians appeared in the media on election day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The monitoring team was made up of communication students from three universities, which was an interesting kick-off for discussing issues such as gender equality, gender-sensitive communication, and political violence against women. The results of previous WACC monitoring served to raise awareness and train students on these issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, within my organization Ku\u00f1a R\u00f3ga<\/a> there are several of us who have experience monitoring for WACC, and it is an acquired capacity for the organization, an expertise applicable to many fields. In the near future, we want to develop more monitoring with a focus on women and develop training materials based on the results obtained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What positive change has the GMMP driven in your context? What contribution has it made to the process towards gender equality in or through the media?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I think raising awareness is fundamental. In the abstract it is easy to say that women, human rights, or other social issues occupy important places in the media, but the hard data tells a different story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is essential to have these diagnoses in order to address decision-makers, whether with demands, proposals, lobbying, etc. It also serves to make the media itself aware of its responsibility in this regard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As we mark the GMMP\u2019s 30th anniversary now in 2025<\/strong>, <\/strong>why do you believe that it is crucial for the GMMP to continue?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I believe that human rights are experiencing setbacks, or at least serious risks of setbacks, in many parts of the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Latin America, right-wing governments are advancing, and fundamentalisms and anti-rights organizations are strengthening to the detriment of women, LGBTI+ people, racialized people and other marginalized groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The media has an important role not only in the way it presents an agenda of issues to society but also in shaping discourse and the way we think about things. It is important to analyze which news stories and discourses are chosen to be prioritized over others, and to reflect on the reasons for this and the consequences it may have in our current delicate regional context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00bfPor qu\u00e9 es usted el\/la coordinador\/a del GMMP? \u00bfQu\u00e9 le motiv\u00f3 a dirigir el GMMP?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Esta ser\u00e1 mi primera experiencia como coordinadora, si bien ya fui voluntaria en el monitoreo del 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La experiencia del 2020 me result\u00f3 muy interesante y movilizadora, los resultados me parecieron reveladores en muchos sentidos. Considero que un monitoreo no s\u00f3lo sirve como diagn\u00f3stico sino tambi\u00e9n como denuncia de una situaci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00bfC\u00f3mo utiliza (o ha aplicado) la metodolog\u00eda, las herramientas y\/o los resultados del GMMP? \u00bfC\u00f3mo ha influido alguna de estas dimensiones del GMMP en el trabajo de su organizaci\u00f3n, instituci\u00f3n o red?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

En el 2022, puntualmente, coordin\u00e9 un monitoreo de medios que buscaba relevar la frecuencia y la forma en que las mujeres pol\u00edticas aparec\u00edan relevadas en los medios de comunicaci\u00f3n en el d\u00eda de las elecciones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

El equipo de monitoreo estuvo conformado por estudiantes de comunicaci\u00f3n de tres universidades, lo cual fue un puntapi\u00e9 interesante para debatir temas como la igualdad de g\u00e9nero, la comunicaci\u00f3n con perspectiva de g\u00e9nero y la violencia pol\u00edtica contra las mujeres. Los resultados de monitoreos previos de la WACC sirvieron para sensibilizar y capacitar a los estudiantes en torno a estos temas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hoy, dentro de mi organizaci\u00f3n Ku\u00f1a R\u00f3ga<\/a> somos varias las personas que tenemos experiencia monitoreando para la WACC y es una capacidad adquirida para la organizaci\u00f3n, un expertise aplicable a muchos \u00e1mbitos. Pr\u00f3ximamente queremos desarrollar m\u00e1s monitoreos que tengan a las mujeres como foco, y desarrollar materiales de formaci\u00f3n a partir de los resultados obtenidos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00bfQu\u00e9 cambios positivos ha producido el GMMP en su contexto? \u00bfQu\u00e9 contribuci\u00f3n ha hecho al proceso de promoci\u00f3n de la igualdad entre mujeres y hombres en los medios o a trav\u00e9s de ellos?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Creo que la toma de conciencia es fundamental. En abstracto es f\u00e1cil decir que las mujeres, los derechos humanos, u otros temas sociales ocupan lugares importantes en los medios, pero los datos duros arrojan otra informaci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Es esencial contar con estos diagn\u00f3sticos para dirigirnos a los agentes tomadores de decisi\u00f3n, ya sea con exigencias, propuestas, lobby, etc. Tambi\u00e9n sirve para plantear a los propios medios de comunicaci\u00f3n su responsabilidad al respecto.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

De cara al 30\u00ba aniversario del GMMP en 2025, \u00bfpor qu\u00e9 cree que es esencial que contin\u00fae?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Creo que los derechos humanos est\u00e1n experimentando retrocesos, o al menos riesgos graves de retrocesos, en muchas partes del mundo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

En Latinoam\u00e9rica los gobiernos de derecha avanzan y los fundamentalismos y organizaciones antiderechos se fortalecen en detrimento de las mujeres, personas LGBTI+, personas racializadas y otros grupos marginados.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Los medios de comunicaci\u00f3n tienen un papel importante no solo en la instalaci\u00f3n de una agenda de temas ante la sociedad, sino que tambi\u00e9n moldean discursos e imaginarios. Es importante analizar qu\u00e9 noticias y discursos se eligen priorizar por sobre otros, y reflexionar sobre los motivos y las consecuencias que esto puede traer en nuestro delicado contexto regional actual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
