Why are you a GMMP coordinator? What motivated you to lead the GMMP?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since my beginnings in journalism (several decades ago) I have been immersed in gender issues, and for many years I have worked with the Espacio de Comunicaci\u00f3n Insular<\/a> (ESPACINSULAR \u2013 Island Communication Space), an organization committed to strengthening ties between the peoples of the Dominican Republic and Haiti.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a researcher, I find the GMMP is an opportunity to contribute and receive enriching knowledge. Also, I\u2019m involved in the GMMP because of the commitment to an inclusive and rights-based journalism with a gender focus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2015, from January 8 to 10, together with the director of ESPACINSULAR, Jos\u00e9 Luis Soto, we participated in the seminar and assembly that WACC Caribbean held in Puerto Rico, and in that space, we talked about the possibility of coordinating monitoring in the Dominican Republic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We were interested in the opportunity offered to us through the ESPACINSULAR to coordinate in the country the research carried out by the GMMP on the presence and treatment given to women in the media, in order to make visible the reality and the media treatment of women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How are you using the GMMP methodology, tools and findings? How have any of these dimensions of the GMMP shaped the work of your organization, institution or network?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In each monitoring we have applied the methodology and tools shared with us from the GMMP global coordination to ensure that the results are reliable and comparable. We work with the monitors to familiarize and train them, so that they are able to apply them on the day selected for the data collection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As for the results, from ESPACINSULAR we send them to the global coordination, and when we receive the final country report, and the corresponding GMMP global report, we disseminate it through the media (local and national) and our social networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The GMMP has allowed us to dialogue with professionals and students of social communication sciences, who have participated as monitors, but also with institutions and organizations with which we have shared the results of the monitoring. Likewise, being able to influence the media with the results of the GMMP has been a fundamental part of making the presence of women in the media more visible. Today, ESPACINSULAR is a reference in local organization of monitoring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What positive change has the GMMP driven in your context? What contribution has it made to the process towards gender equality in or through the media?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We have not been able to document whether changes have been experienced. But we have socialized in the media and with the organizations the results of each monitoring on the presence of women as subjects, the way they are made invisible, and the machista<\/em> character that predominates in the Dominican media and in general.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As we mark the GMMP\u2019s 30th anniversary now in 2025<\/strong>, <\/strong>why do you believe that it is crucial for the GMMP to continue?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In order to give continuity to the issues of gender inequality, both in the governmental sphere and in civil society organizations, we must have up-to-date data collected using a scientific methodology that allows us to document setbacks and advances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The task of achieving a greater presence of women in the media is a long and ongoing one. Making gender equality possible, and ensuring that it is reflected in the media, will not be an easy task. The GMMP has proven to be a very useful measurement tool. For this reason, we consider the continuity of the GMMP to be essential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00bfPor qu\u00e9 es usted el\/la coordinador\/a del GMMP? \u00bfQu\u00e9 le motiv\u00f3 a dirigir el GMMP?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Desde mis inicios en el periodismo (hace varias d\u00e9cadas) he estado inmersa en los temas de g\u00e9nero, y desde hace varios lustros soy colaboradora del Espacio de Comunicaci\u00f3n Insular<\/a>. Como investigadora, el GMMP es una oportunidad para aportar y recibir conocimientos enriquecedores. Adem\u00e1s, por el compromiso con un periodismo inclusivo y de derechos con enfoque de g\u00e9nero, como el que se propone desde el GMMP.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

En 2015, del 8 al 10 de enero, junto al director del Espacio de Comunicaci\u00f3n Insular, Jos\u00e9 Luis Soto, participamos en el Seminario y la Asamblea que WACC Caribe realiz\u00f3 en Puerto Rico, y en ese espacio conversamos sobre la posibilidad de coordinar el monitoreo en Rep\u00fablica Dominicana. Nos interes\u00f3 esa oportunidad que se nos brindaba a trav\u00e9s del Espacio de Comunicaci\u00f3n Insular, de coordinar en el pa\u00eds la investigaci\u00f3n que realiza el GMMP sobre la presencia y el tratamiento que se le da a la mujer en los medios de comunicaci\u00f3n, para aportar a visibilizar la realidad y el tratamiento medi\u00e1tico de las mujeres.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00bfC\u00f3mo utiliza (o ha aplicado) la metodolog\u00eda, las herramientas y\/o los resultados del GMMP? \u00bfC\u00f3mo ha influido alguna de estas dimensiones del GMMP en el trabajo de su organizaci\u00f3n, instituci\u00f3n o red?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

En cada monitoreo hemos aplicado la metodolog\u00eda y las herramientas que nos comparten desde la coordinaci\u00f3n global del GMMP, para garantizar que los resultados sean confiables y comparables. Con las y los monitores trabajamos en su familiarizaci\u00f3n y entrenamiento, para que sean capaces de aplicarlas el d\u00eda seleccionado para el levantamiento de la data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

En cuanto a los resultados, desde el Espacio de Comunicaci\u00f3n Insular los remitimos a la coordinaci\u00f3n global, y cuando recibimos el informe final pa\u00eds, y el informe global del GMMP correspondiente, lo difundimos a trav\u00e9s de los medios de comunicaci\u00f3n (locales y nacionales) y las redes sociales del Espacio de Comunicaci\u00f3n Insular.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nos ha permitido articular con personas profesionales y estudiantes de Ciencias de la Comunicaci\u00f3n Social, quienes han participado como monitores, pero tambi\u00e9n con instituciones y organizaciones con las que hemos compartido los resultados del monitoreo. Igualmente poder hacer incidencia en los medios de comunicaci\u00f3n con los resultados del GMMP ha sido parte fundamental para visibilizar la presencia de las mujeres en los medios. Hoy, el Espacio de Comunicaci\u00f3n Insular es un referente en la organizaci\u00f3n local del monitoreo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00bfQu\u00e9 cambios positivos ha producido el GMMP en su contexto? \u00bfQu\u00e9 contribuci\u00f3n ha hecho al proceso de promoci\u00f3n de la igualdad entre mujeres y hombres en los medios o a trav\u00e9s de ellos?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

No hemos podido documentar si se han experimentado cambios. Pero s\u00ed hemos socializado en los medios y con las organizaciones los resultados de cada monitoreo sobre la presencia de las mujeres como sujeto, su invisibilizaci\u00f3n y el car\u00e1cter machista que predomina en los medios de comunicaci\u00f3n dominicanos y en general.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

De cara al 30\u00ba aniversario del GMMP en 2025, \u00bfpor qu\u00e9 cree que es esencial que contin\u00fae?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Para dar continuidad a los temas de la desigualdad de g\u00e9nero, tanto en el \u00e1mbito gubernamental como en las organizaciones de la sociedad civil, debemos contar con data actualizada y levantada con una metodolog\u00eda cient\u00edfica que nos permita documentar los retrocesos y los avances\u2026 La tarea por lograr m\u00e1s presencia de las mujeres en los medios de comunicaci\u00f3n es larga y permanente. Hacer posible la igualdad de g\u00e9neros, y que esta se refleje en los medios de comunicaci\u00f3n, no ser\u00e1 tarea f\u00e1cil. Y el GMMP ha evidenciado ser una herramienta de medici\u00f3n muy \u00fatil. Por ello consideramos esencial la continuidad del GMMP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
