What motivated you to lead the GMMP?

My role in the GMMP began with the 2015 monitoring, when I worked as a monitor. Then in 2020 I worked as a coordinator and for 2025 I will work as national coordinator thanks to the appointment and trust of the Office of Education and Communication for Development (SECRAD) of the Bolivian Catholic University – La Paz.

If we talk more about a personal motivation, I am passionate about gender issues, the right to communication and research.

What positive change has the GMMP driven in your context? What contribution has it made to the process towards gender equality in or through the media?

Comparing the two latest versions of the GMMP studies, 2015 and 2020, we can conclude that there has been progress in the presence of women in the economy, in social and health issues, but less so in politics or public activity related to women.

As we look to the GMMP’s 30th anniversary in 2025, why do you believe that it is crucial for the GMMP to continue?

I believe the GMMP needs to continue because although the media doesn’t tell us what to think, we think based on what we consume from them. Therefore, they delimit the frontiers of our knowledge and judgments, and we reinforce our stereotypes and concepts through what we consume from the media.

Furthermore, there are also regulations in place at both a global and national level. At a global level, for example, we have the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women as well as Section J of the Beijing Platform for Action. At a national level, there are Article 106 of the Constitution of Bolivia, Article 11 of the National Code of Journalistic Ethics, and Article 7 of the Code of Ethics of the Federation of Press Workers of Bolivia.

Lorna Arauz Rodríguez is a postgraduate analyst and researcher.
