As GMMP co-coordinator for England I am looking forward to working with Barbara Mitra and the wider team in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland to better understand the representation of women in contemporary news media. This is because as a working-class feminist academic, I have always considered issues of representation to be central to our wider understanding of the state and progress of gender equality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have previously explored the representation of women politicians in British news media<\/a> and have worked as a consultant for organisations such as Plan International UK and the Women\u2019s Equality Party, and so consider the generation of robust evidence to be a crucial resource in our activism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The GMMP presents an exciting opportunity to not only develop this rich body of knowledge, but importantly it also provides an occasion for collaborative knowledge production, drawing on the expertise of emerging and established scholars alike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am excited to be a part of the project as it enters its 30th year, building this dataset to push for change with the hope that in the future such initiatives will no longer be needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have always focused on gender representation in my teaching and research and have previously written about gender inequalities in news reporting<\/a>. Being part of the GMMP project is an exciting opportunity that will enable me to develop and continue exploring these issues and to become part of a global network advocating for change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The gendered stereotypes and underrepresentation of women in news reporting can perpetuate biases as well as influence choices, discrimination and remuneration. As co-coordinator, I am looking forward to making an impact, by raising awareness about inequalities, working with others, and influencing debates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
