Each year, this day serves as a reminder of the progress made towards gender equality and highlights the work that still needs to be done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For International Women\u2019s Day 2024 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.internationalwomensday.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">we are encouraged to imagine<\/a> \u201ca world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination. A world that&#8217;s diverse, equitable, and inclusive. A world where difference is valued and celebrated.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year&#8217;s campaign <a href=\"https:\/\/www.internationalwomensday.com\/Missions\/20202\/What-does-it-mean-to-truly-inspire-inclusion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">calls for action<\/a> to \u201cbreak down barriers, challenge stereotypes, and create environments where all women are valued and respected.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The space for inclusion in the news media industry is vast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/whomakesthenews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/GMMP2020.ENG_.FINAL_.pdf\">Media monitoring evidence<\/a> reveals that the probability for underrepresentation and misrepresentation of women across the range of news-making roles increases exponentially when they are indigenous, racial or ethnic minorities, persons with disabilities and\/or refugees. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Latin America for example, only 3% of the people in the news are from Indigenous or tribal groups and of these only one in five is a woman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe failure to extend the opportunity for more citizens to tell their own stories in their own words, to tell the stories which are important to them and, also, to a broad range of people, compromises the value of the news to its multiple and diverse publics,\u201d notes the <a href=\"https:\/\/whomakesthenews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/GMMP2020.ENG_.FINAL_.pdf\">6th GMMP Final Report<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/waccglobal.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">global communication rights organization WACC<\/a> calls its members, partners, and networks to take action to champion the substantive inclusion of diverse women in news media organisations, in media leadership and decision-making positions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We call for advocacy to drive fair and balanced inclusion of women from all backgrounds in media content, free of gender stereotypes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-left\">5 Ways to #InspireInclusion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Use the <a href=\"https:\/\/whomakesthenews.org\/es\/gender-ethics-compass\/\">Gender Ethics Compass<\/a> to gain an understanding of gender-responsive journalism. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rate news media for gender-balanced reporting with the <a href=\"https:\/\/whomakesthenews.org\/es\/advocacy-resources\/#scorecard\">Media Gender Equality Scorecard<\/a>. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Build your capacity to act with the <a href=\"https:\/\/whomakesthenews.org\/es\/advocacy-resources\/mission-possible-a-gender-and-media-advocacy-training-toolkit\/\">\u201cMission Possible\u201d Gender and Media Advocacy Training Toolkit<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Call out sexist reporting by using the <a href=\"https:\/\/whomakesthenews.org\/es\/advocacy-resources\/#letter-editor\">\u201cThis is NOT Ok!\u201d template<\/a> to write a letter to the editor.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Share on social media with the hashtag #InspireInclusiveMedia about how you are creating space for the inclusion of women in the news media industry.
