{"id":11844,"date":"2023-12-07T12:47:26","date_gmt":"2023-12-07T17:47:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/whomakesthenews.org\/?p=11844"},"modified":"2023-12-07T12:47:27","modified_gmt":"2023-12-07T17:47:27","slug":"kigali-declaration-outlines-african-commitment-to-eliminating-gender-violence-in-and-thorough-the-media","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/whomakesthenews.org\/es\/kigali-declaration-outlines-african-commitment-to-eliminating-gender-violence-in-and-thorough-the-media\/","title":{"rendered":"Kigali Declaration outlines African commitment to eliminating gender violence in and thorough the media"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Participants at the <a href=\"https:\/\/awim2023.africanwomeninmedia.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">African Women in Media (AWiM) Conference 2023<\/a> agreed on principles for change by adopting the <a href=\"https:\/\/africanwomeninmedia.com\/declaration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Kigali Declaration on the Elimination of Gender Violence in and through Media<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>at the event\u2019s closing session on 1 December.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The action-oriented document addresses gender-based violence in news media organizations and its representation in news media content. The Declaration<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>asserts that African media have the power to shape narratives and inform public knowledge on all forms of gender violence;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>recognizes the urgent need for principles to guide media in reporting on gender-based violence and in adequately combating gender-based violence experienced by staff in the line of duty; and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>sets out baseline measures for different groups of stakeholders in the media sector.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Participants helped to further shape the draft of the Declaration, prepared by representatives from the media sector, academia, and civil society in a consultatory process chaired by Sarah Macharia, global coordinator of <a href=\"https:\/\/whomakesthenews.org\/es\/the-gmmp\/\">WACC\u2019s Global Media Monitoring Project<\/a> (GMMP).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Shifting news portrayal of gender violence<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/whomakesthenews.org\/es\/gmmp-reports\/\">Findings from the GMMP<\/a> indicate that gender-based violence, the most pervasive form of human rights violation, is hardly newsworthy. In Africa, just 1% of stories cover this topic across all news platforms,\u201d Macharia said during the keynote panel on media and gender violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The shortcomings in gender violence news reporting have consequences for the lived experience of girls and women, the WACC gender and media expert stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She pointed to the need for balanced and non-stereotyped portrayal to shift discriminatory social norms underlying power asymmetries that enable gendered violence to continue and that normalize and excuse it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Declaration marks a milestone for concerted commitment to change the picture,&#8221; she affirmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"341\" src=\"https:\/\/whomakesthenews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/AWiM-speakers_web-insert-1024x341.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11852\" srcset=\"https:\/\/whomakesthenews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/AWiM-speakers_web-insert-1024x341.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/whomakesthenews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/AWiM-speakers_web-insert-300x100.jpg 300w, https:\/\/whomakesthenews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/AWiM-speakers_web-insert-768x256.jpg 768w, https:\/\/whomakesthenews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/AWiM-speakers_web-insert-1536x512.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/whomakesthenews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/AWiM-speakers_web-insert-2048x682.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/whomakesthenews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/AWiM-speakers_web-insert-18x6.jpg 18w, https:\/\/whomakesthenews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/AWiM-speakers_web-insert-700x233.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Combatting violence against women working in media <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Macharia said that the Declaration acknowledges that women working in the media sector are subjected to gender-based violence and establishes the need for media-related entities to address all forms of violence against women in the physical and online workplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Agneta Soderberg Jacobson, senior gender advisor at the <a href=\"https:\/\/fojo.se\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fojo Media Institute<\/a>, said that research by her institute and <a href=\"https:\/\/africanwomeninmedia.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AWiM<\/a> shows the deep impact of sexual harassment and gendered discrimination on women in media. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe fact that women journalists consider leaving or have left the media sector because of sexual harassment is unacceptable.
