The Platform, which has acted as the global policy blueprint for gender equality since 1995, clearly outlines key thematic areas of concern\u2014among them, the media. However, she said, the focus of action has become fuzzy in recent years as new development paradigms and challenges have emerged. She stressed that the need to \u201cinterrogate existing norms and reinforce mechanisms to strengthen gender equality within the media and digital sectors\u201d is more urgent than ever.<\/span><\/p><p><span lang=\"EN-CA\" style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: black; mso-themecolor: text1; background: white;\">Vega Montiel proposed that the new deal cover a range of actions to promote women\u2019s communications rights. These should include gender and media policy research, frameworks for algorithmic transparency, gender-focussed media and digital literacy targeting in particular girls and women, steps to ensure safety for women journalists and media professionals, and measures to address offline and online gender-based violence.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"background: white; vertical-align: baseline;\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\" style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: black; mso-themecolor: text1; background: white; mso-bidi-font-style: italic;\">Reflecting on the current state of and challenges to women\u2019s communication rights, Sarah Macharia, WACC program manager for Gender and Communication, noted the mixed findings of the <\/span><span lang=\"EN-CA\" style=\"color: black; mso-color-alt: windowtext;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/whomakesthenews.org\/es\/gmmp-2020-final-reports\/\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; background: white; mso-bidi-font-style: italic;\">6<sup>th<\/sup> Global Media Monitoring Project (GMMP)<\/span><\/a><\/span><span lang=\"EN-CA\" style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: black; mso-themecolor: text1; background: white; mso-bidi-font-style: italic;\"> in 2020. <\/span><\/p><p style=\"background: white; vertical-align: baseline;\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\" style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: black; mso-themecolor: text1; background: white; mso-bidi-font-style: italic;\">The results are<\/span><span lang=\"EN-CA\" style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: black; mso-themecolor: text1;\"> both encouraging and disheartening, considered across a 25-year trajectory, <span style=\"background: white; mso-bidi-font-style: italic;\">Macharia<\/span> said. \u201cEncouraging on some indicators because we see steps forward, albeit very slow. Disheartening on other indicators because women\u2019s voices continue to be drowned out in important news spaces, and communication rights are further out of reach for those who multiply marginalized.\u201d <\/span><\/p><p><span lang=\"EN-CA\" style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: black; mso-themecolor: text1;\">Macharia drew attention to the opportunities to engage with strategic international policy-making bodies and to utilize the growing pool of regulatory instruments to secure women\u2019s communication rights. She highlighted the 2022 <\/span><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/sites\/default\/files\/2022-05\/Gender-Joint-Declaration-Freedex.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Joint Declaration on Freedom of Expression and Gender Justice<\/a><\/span><span lang=\"EN-CA\" style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: black; mso-themecolor: text1;\">, which calls for a \u201cwhole of society\u201d approach, underlining gender equality and the right to freedom of opinion and expression as \u201cmutually reinforcing, indivisible and interdependent.\u201d<\/span><\/p><p><span lang=\"EN-CA\" style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: black; mso-themecolor: text1;\">Speakers included further members of GAMAG and representatives from <\/span><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.agemi-eu.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">Advancing Gender Equality in Media Industries (AGEMI)<\/span><\/a><\/span><span lang=\"EN-CA\" style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: black; mso-themecolor: text1;\">, the <\/span><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.coe.int\/en\/web\/portal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">Council of Europe<\/span><\/a><\/span><span lang=\"EN-CA\" style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;
