Report: A new report about “Violence and Harassment against women in the News Media”

The International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF) and the International News Safety Institute (INSI) published the report  “Violence and harassment against women in the news media”. The report documents the dangers and threats women encounter during their work. The 40-page report reveals the experiences of nearly 1,000 female journalists around the world.

In the foreword the researchers note: “We asked questions about violence and harassment, and physical, sexual, and digital threats, where such acts were committed and who the main perpetrators were. We also asked respondents how their news organisations currently prepare and protect them against harassment and violence.”

Certain trends were identified in the report, and recommendations offered on how a safer working environment can be established.

Advancing gender equality in media

In my opinion, the most effective strategy to achieve gender-sensitive media is:

Increased gender-awareness training of media professionals
Greater action by audiences to hold their media accountable
Stricter enforcement of gender-focussed media codes and policies
More female journalists, editors and media house managers

#MeToo #TimesUp

In my view, society is less tolerant of sexist stereotypes in the media now than three years ago.
