Nordic Gender and media forum NORDICOM

The Nordic Gender & Media Forum invites researchers, activists and stakeholders within the media sector to participate in a discussion about gender equality in the media.

Outcomes of the discussion and gender-based statistics for the Nordic media industry (film, journalism, advertisement and computer games) will be presented at seminars during spring 2014 and a conference on sharing good practices in Bergen on May 7th, 2014.

The calendar of events includes:

  • March 6: Journalism seminar
  • April 2: Computer games seminar
  • April 24: Advertising seminar
  • May 7: The Bergen Conference
  • December: Book launch

Among the key organizers of the Forum is the Global Media Monitoring Project team in Sweden.

Advancing gender equality in media

In my opinion, the most effective strategy to achieve gender-sensitive media is:

Increased gender-awareness training of media professionals
Greater action by audiences to hold their media accountable
Stricter enforcement of gender-focussed media codes and policies
More female journalists, editors and media house managers
