HUNGARY: GMMP at 'Women on the Agenda" conference

The Hungarian Women’s Lobby held a conference titled "Women on the Agenda" which addressed gender equality in the media. The Lobby which is coordinating the Global Media Monitoring Project (GMMP) in Hungary shared the 2015 preliminary findings. The success of the conference captured the interest of mainstream television and online media. Representative Reka Safrany is seen interviewed on TV2 Mokka below.

The conference also served to bring attention to gender-aware journalism by presenting the Hypatia media awards to deserving candidates. This year, the award ceremony had a special feature –a contest that called for short video clips related to gender equality and media. A Facebook voting campaign was launched to help select the winner.

Advancing gender equality in media

In my opinion, the most effective strategy to achieve gender-sensitive media is:

Increased gender-awareness training of media professionals
Greater action by audiences to hold their media accountable
Stricter enforcement of gender-focussed media codes and policies
More female journalists, editors and media house managers

#MeToo #TimesUp

In my view, society is less tolerant of sexist stereotypes in the media now than three years ago.
