Germany: “ Speakerinnen-Liste” – Gender equity in public discourse

Rails Girls Berlin, an international non-profit organization specialized in fostering women’s skills in computer and IT issues has established a new online platform for women experts.

Dubbed ‘Speakerinnen-Liste”, the platform’s objective is to increase the visibility of women in conferences, talk shows or panels.  The platform features a database in which event organizers can find women experts on different themes.

On the occasion of the 2014 International Women’s Day March 8,  Journalistinnenbund, the federation of female journalists in Germany announced cooperation with Speakerinnen-Liste. In the past the federation has often been critical of the marginal presence of women in public spaces such as in the media.

Advancing gender equality in media

In my opinion, the most effective strategy to achieve gender-sensitive media is:

Increased gender-awareness training of media professionals
Greater action by audiences to hold their media accountable
Stricter enforcement of gender-focussed media codes and policies
More female journalists, editors and media house managers
