Egyptian Center for Women’s Rights launches media forum

The Egyptian Center for Women’s Rights (ECWR) has launched a new “Egyptian Women and the Media Forum”. The Forum will facilitate journalists' access to information, data and statistics regarding women in Egypt.

Launched in March 2014 during a meeting between ECWR and  journalists from several newspapers, the Forum responds to the lack of information about women in Egypt that is accessible for journalists.

ECWR's blog indicates that the Centre will release press briefings on its website to make available to journalists and media professionals information and statistics they are researching. "ECWR will also put forward the names of female experts in different fields for the Egyptian media".

Since 1996 ECWR has worked to improve the political and legal status of women in Egypt.

Advancing gender equality in media

In my opinion, the most effective strategy to achieve gender-sensitive media is:

Increased gender-awareness training of media professionals
Greater action by audiences to hold their media accountable
Stricter enforcement of gender-focussed media codes and policies
More female journalists, editors and media house managers
