Gender groups appeal to social networking site to remove gender-offensive speech

"Prominent gender rights groups have petitioned popular social networking site Facebook this week to address the representation of rape and domestic violence on its site.

The petition calls for comprehensive, swift and effective action from the website owners to recognise speech that glorifies violence against women and to be intolerant towards such posts. It appeals to the site to "effectively train moderators to recognize and remove gender-based hate speech.""

The most important contribution that the Beijing Platform for Action has made to advancing gender equality in and through the media is:

Setting global standards to which governments and the media can be held accountable
Bringing coherence to and greater understanding of civil society initiatives on gender, women and media
Raising the profile of work on 'women and media' as important for addressing gender inequalities in women's lived experiences.
