IFJ Gender Equality Newsletter

  on May 23, 2014

The May 2014 issue of the Gender Equality Newsletter, a publication of the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) is now available.

The current issue calls attention to IFJ's global campaign to end violence against women journalists launched in November, 2013 "in response to the numerous cases of women journalists being threatened, attacked, harassed, raped or even killed in the course of their profession". It profiles the cases of four journalists who in 2014 were either murdered or subjected to gender violence in the course of carrying out their work.

Other articles includes launches of several new publications, among them:

-"A toolkit for gender equality in practice" published by European organisations representing workers and employers. The toolkit addresses "gender role, women in decision making positions, work life balance and the gender pay gap".

- “Gender in the Media” booklet published by the European Youth Press containing guidelines for young journalists on reporting about gender-sensitive issues.

-The European Commission's annual Gender Equality Report released in April 2014.

Beijing +20: In my opinion...

The most important contribution that the Beijing Platform for Action has made to advancing gender equality in and through the media is:

Setting global standards to which governments and the media can be held accountable
Bringing coherence to and greater understanding of civil society initiatives on gender, women and media
Raising the profile of work on 'women and media' as important for addressing gender inequalities in women's lived experiences.
